If cats feel threatened by another cat, they tend to fluff their tail (I don't know the proper word for it) and point it directly up in the air then hiss and growl. The two cats may (depending on their personality) attack each other. This sort of behaviour is usually over territory as cats are very dominating animals.
If its new to you it might take some time for it to get used to you. Be careful and patient. Just one too fast movement could ruin all your hard work. Why not try out to give it treats from your hand? Just do not hold it against its will or anything otherwise it won't trust you ever again. If its an adopted adult cat with a bad background I don't know what helps then, but if that's the case then try talking to your vet. Hope I helped.
When scared, a cat hurries to run, often with tail tucked between their legs and a lower body stance. The cat puts distance between the frightening person or event, and often goes to a small "hiding" place. If the threat continues to come near OR if the cat cannot get away, it's hair might stand up as it screams or hisses. The tail bushes out. The raising of fur is to make their bodies with tails look bigger to an enemy. The cat may bare its teeth but will not attack or bite unless so highly stressed that they see no other way out.
1. Your cats eyes will go really big 2. Its ears will go back
3. Its tail will fluff up
and it might start meowing or hiss
Every cat does something differnet when they are scared. Most of them will puff up there tails. They will do some other things as well, but they vary from cat to cat.

The Viet Cong are scared of a dead cat.
either a hiss, ( mouth is wide, jaw opened, eyes squinted) or probably just a scared meow
Put it in a nice comfy place and stroke it. If she gets scared calm her down.

are you scared he is going to hurt you?
Try practicing everyday... once your cat gets used to it, it won't be scared anymore. You can also try to get your animal calm before you know if someone is coming.
Maybe your cat finds you terrifying
yes. he gets scared very easily like his girlfriend brooke.
I get scared of my cat when I am in the dark because if I don't know my cat is in the room he brushes his tail on my foot and I thing it's` a mouse.
