There are several things that funeral homes do to a body..depending on state laws...

Basically The first thing is that the body is placed in a refrigeration unit at 45*F until all the paperwork for that body is verified... The body will remain there until the family, next of kin, or in some cases the state decides on the burial procedures to be done.

*

If the family, next of kin, or the state decides that there will not be a viewing and the body is to be cremated then the funeral home (if equipped) will wash the body and place it in a cardboard box and send it to the crematorium to be burned...If there is to be a viewing and then a cremation then in many states the body must then be embalmed first..

*

If there is to be a viewing and a burial the body is then embalmed(preserved).

The first step in the embalming process is to wash off any waste, bodily fluids, or other materials on the body. Then the muscles are massaged to get rid of stiffness, called rigor mortis, which can make it difficult to move the body. This also helps to break up any congealment or clots in the blood that may have formed after death.

*

The next step in the embalming process is to set the face. An eye cup is placed over the eyes, to hid sinking, and the eyelids are closed and sealed, usually with glue or other adhesive substance. The mouth is sealed shut in a natural look, and the body is arranged in a natural position. This is all done first because embalming will set the features, making them very hard to move later on..

*

Once the face is ready, the mortician begins embalming the body. He makes a cut in a main artery, usually near the armpit or groin, to drain out all of the blood. Another slit is made, and approximately three gallons of embalming fluid, made of formaldehyde, methanol and ethanol is pumped through the veins, pushing out any remaining blood.

*

The embalming process continues with a small cut above the navel. The mortician inserts a tube into the abdomen through the cut. A pump is attached to the tube, and the contents of the stomach and intestines are pumped out. This also removes all of the gases from the body, preventing bloating. During this part of the embalming process, the mortician also aspirates the abdominal cavity and the insides of any organs. Full-strength embalming fluid is then pumped into the organs and abdomen.

*

After the incissions made on the body are stitched closed the mortician then seals the rectum/anus/vaginal cavity's to prevent any fluids from leaking, the mortician then washes the body again, including shampooing the hair. Facial hair that may get in the way of makeup application is shaved, and then the body is dressed in clothes. After that, the hair and makeup is styled, at which point the body is set in the casket for family and friends to view at the calling hours.

When a person has been pronounced dead, what will be done next will depend upon where he died, when he died, why he died, and the wishes of the family.

If the death occurs in the hospital and at night, the nurses will probably transfer the remains in a body bag, and onto a discrete gurney known as a mortuary cart, to the hospital morgue. If he dies during the day and prior arrangements have been made, the funeral will be contacted by the family to arrange for the remains to be picked up. This will also occur if the person dies at home, in a nursing home, or in hospice.

The transferring of the remains from the place of death or the medical examiner's office to the funeral home is known as a removal. When the remains are transferred to its destination, it will be placed into a cooler where it will await disposition or family arrangements. What happens next will depend on what the family wants.

If the body is to be directly disposed of, such as direct burial or cremation, arrangements will be done accordingly. In the case of cremation the remains will have to be stored for at least 48 hours pending the approval of the medical examiner before such remains may be cremated. The draft copy of a death certificate is faxed over to the Medical Examiner's Office for his approval prior to cremation. In the case of direct burial, no medical examiner permission is necessary.

If the arrangements call for a full funeral service, the remains will be embalmed, dressed, and casketed. The casketed remains would then be transferred into one of the viewing rooms for viewing in the family wishes.

This may be preceded by or followed by air transportation to another funeral home for final disposition.

On day of the funeral the remains will be placed in the main chapel of the funeral home or transported to the church or place of worship for funeral services.

If the body will be cremated after the funeral it will be de-casketed (unless the casket that was purchased is designed for cremation), and forwarded to a crematory if the funeral home does not have one of its own.

If the remains will be buried it will be transported to the cemetery either in the form of a funeral procession or it will be transferred to the airport to be flown to the location of the cemetery.

In the case of unnatural or unattended deaths the remains are transferred from the place of death to the Medical Examiner's Office of the County in which the death occurred, where an autopsy will be performed before the body is released to the funeral home.

The presentation of the deceased is a process provided by funeral directors to help survivors have a positive and endearing final memory picture of their loved one in silent repose.

On some occasions, family members may prefer that their loved one not be dressed in their general clothing, preferring to use collections offered by the funeral director. This can range from a simple, yet lovely shroud or dressing gown available in different styles and colours. Or it can extend to everything from every-day attire, such as sporting outfits, or day suits, to formal attire such as cocktail or evening dresses and dinner jackets.

The funeral director takes great care in the dressing of the loved one, dressing them just as you might expect to dress someone who is lying prostrate. Adornments such as jewellery, tie, etc., are added at the instruction of the family, as are shoes. At the discretion of the family, arrangements may be made for their loved one to wear their jewellery for the viewing, then removed prior to the sealing of the coffin.

For children, funeral directors often use a favourite piece of clothing or pyjamas, and even sports attire. Professional funeral directors will always ensure the child is presented as beautifully as possible.

In some countries, such as the US, funeral directors arrange for cosmetologists, hairdressers, and even manicurists to prepare the deceased for viewing presentation. In scenarios such as these, it's often that the bereaved feel compelled to purchase the finest attire for their loved one to be displayed in the costly and often extravagant coffins (caskets) they've purchased.

Most funeral homes have freezer type systems in which they preserve bodies, they also remain very cool inside the funeral homes to keep everything nice and neat. Bodies are kept at a cool temperature and maintained for viewing, powder/make-up is also applied to help preserve bodies.

Cremation is the process of reducing the body to ashes and bone fragments through the use of intense heat.

Typically, they will remove anything that won't burn properly or which will cause problems. So if you have silicone implants or certain medical devices, they would remove those. Then they might put you inside a cardboard box. Then they turn on the incinerator and push the box containing the body into the incinerator. Then after the incinerator cools, they scoop out what didn't burn, typically the bones, along with some of the ashes (which might even belong to others), grind it up, and put it in an urn.
