when a warm air mass displaces a cold air mass. the signs a warm front is approaching is seeing high cirrus clouds. the denser cold air wedges up the oncoming warm air-this is called frontal lifting or frontal wedging- and forms alto stratus then stratus clouds causing a drizzle. after a warm front is clear skies and sun

Typically, you see high cirrus clouds a couple days in advance, which eventually lower into stratus or nimbostratus (low) clouds. Weak warm fronts don't always produce precipitation, but stronger ones are associated with low pressure systems that produce light to moderate, steady precipitation.
