Most equine veterinary technicians have a high school diploma or GED in addition to two or more years of college in an accredited program for veterinary technicians. They earn an associates degree in a two year program, or a B.S. for a four year program. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) offers accreditation for equine veterinary technician programs. In addition to classroom instruction and certification, equine veterinary technicians need to have significant amounts of hands-on experience with horses. This can be experience gained in a particular equine sport, or employment in an horse barn or stable, or owning and caring for horses.

After earning a degree from an accredited program, future equine veterinary technicians must also pass state exam exam in order to be certified to work as a veterinary technician. Most states require all veterinary technicians to pass the National Veterinary Technician (NVT) exam, though the specific requirements vary from state to state. In order to specialize in equine care, they pass the equine veterinary nursing specialty exam offered by The American Association of Equine Veterinary Technicians (AAEVT). AAEVT also offers certificates in other kinds of equine care, for instance, for equine surgical assistants, or equine nutritionists.
