The flag was changed in 1795 by the French because they had a big influence on the Netherlands. They changed it to Red-White-Blue. Officially it was Orange-White-Blue (Prinsenvlag) because the Prince of Orange conquered the Netherlands and the people made a flag in his honour. The orange meant power, public might, and a defending spirit. The white was neutral and represented Politics and Religion. The blue represented the people, work and the economy.

The flag does not officially represent any concept or structure, it is a centuries old tradition that originated as an orange-white-blue flag and eventually became the current red-white-blue. Dutch scholars have not been able to find out the real origin for these colors, anyone saying there is one is making stuff up.

The dutch flag was originally known as the Princes Flag, after Prince William of orange who led the country in a revolt against spanish domination under the Hapsburg Empire in the 16th century. William's flag was originally orange and white. Over time it went to red white blue. They say this was because red was easier to recognise at sea. The later version of the flag (the one we know today) is said to be inspired by the French Tricolor, a symbol for Freedom and Independence.

How is Luxembourg flag different from Netherlands flag?

Though their flags look similar, they are not the same. Both have three horizontal stripes in the order red, white and blue from top to bottom, but Luxembourg's blue is lighter than that of the Netherlands. This format of flag, as well as the colors red, white and blue, are very popular for use in flags, so having flags that look nearly identical is hard to avoid.
