The term "Contact" was most widely used in the Vietnam War because that particular war was fought for "body counts." All previous US wars were fought for territory. So, when GI's went searching (Search and Destroy Missions) for communists in Vietnam, when they found them...or they found each other, the radioman (the officer in charge) would state that he had "contact!" Example: "Whiskey 2, this is Yankee 6...I have CONTACT!" (Gunfire and explosions in the background over the radio). "...Golf Charley 123456...Over!" (Golf Charley would be GC for Grid Coordinates on the map).
