Coughing is a response to a blockage in either the throat, trachea, or lungs, which is blocking proper airflow (i.e. preventing you from breathing sufficiently).

Coughing is an attempt by the body to expel whatever is causing such a blockage. It is a fairly straight-forward mechanical action - the diaphragm contracts quickly, and uses the created air pressure to "push" against whatever the blockage is. Repeated coughs are used against difficult-to-expel things, such as mucus in the lungs.

Its usually good because it kills bacteria that's in your lungs. Other reasons are if you have water mucus or any other kind of substance in the lungs it can try to get it out. It can be bad if you coughing too much you can cough blood or faint. its also bad if your coughing germ all over. so just cover it to keep it from passing to someone else. I hope my answer was helpful to you.

a cough is usually a reflex triggered when an irritant stimulates one or more of the cough receptors found at different points in the respiratory system. These receptors then send a message to the cough center in the brain

With a cold or upper respiratory infection, you make more mucous than usual and this has to be removed. If it isn't, it will block oxygen/carbon dioxide exchange. Coughing removes the extra mucous.
