Hemoglobin's purpose in a red blood cell is to carry oxygen. In fact almost all the oxygen in your blood is carried on hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is made of protein and iron, if you don't have enough hemoglobin it is called anemia. This is why people who take in no iron can become anemic.

=Hemoglobin is the stuff that makes red blood cells red. The main job of "RBCs" or erythrocytes is to transport oxygen and nutrients, wastes products of metabolism (what our body does constantly) and hormones.==Heme is a red pigmant and globing refers to the protein carrier that carries the heme or iron so that free iron in blood and tissues is not toxic to the body when it travels in blood or when stored in body tissues.==RBCs are mostly hemoglobin so that they can take oxygen to all parts of the body to be used in the thousends of reactions that keep us alive.=

The hemoglobin in red blood cells carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. In order to work, hemoglobin must be contained in a red blood cell. It will not function lose. It is one atom different from chlorophyll. It centers on an iron atom. When the iron atom goes through the lung, it picks up oxygen. Then the heart pumps it through the arteries and capillaries. When it goes through a capillary, it is squeezed and drops off its oxygen. Then the red cells with their hemoglobin return to the heart and lungs for another trip.

It makes blood look red and it holds the oxygen in your blood cells so it can get around. Oxygen can't just float in the vessels. It's like bubbles. It goes to the top. ;)

hope this helps!

As a point of interest, hemoglobin also gives blood its red color because it contains iron.
