How come your bearded dragon wont grow?

Our bearded dragon will stop eating when he has to have a bowel movement. Over time we've discovered that placing him in a very warm, not hot, tub of water and forcing him to swim will generate a bowel movement in just a few minutes. Also make sure that he is warm, If their body temperature is cold, they will not eat. One other thing I'd like to mention is that they will go into a hibernation type of stage , called burmation, that can last from several weeks to a couple of months. Their bodies practically shut down during this period and they stop eating, stay on the ground, hide in their cave, etc. A very good book every bearded dragon owner should have is the 'Bearded Dragon Manual'. Hope this helps!!1 Parasites are a very common problem. They will make your dragon lethargic, not want to be by heat and lack appetite. You should find a good herp/exotics vet that treats reptiles and take him in with a fecal sample. Parasites are easily treated with antibiotics but if not treated they can kill your dragon. As they get older they do become lazy and you may need to put the food right by him. Mine dont chase their food anymore and are 100% healthy. They will also not move much if they are not given the right kind of light or not given proper calcium supplement. This can lead to metabolic bone disease which can be reversed if caught early enough but can be fatal if not addressed. As long as you have a good quality UVB light (8.0 or 10.0) that is no older than 6 months old and he can get within 10 inches from the light and you are using calcium then you can probably count on the parasites as the problem. Improper husbandry no doubt, most likely combined with a parasite infestation. See a vetrinarian right away.

If you are housing more than one dragon there can be a dominance issue and you need to separate them immediately. Yes, parasites can also stunt growth. If you do not have proper UVB lighting, or you arent feeding enough live feed your dragon will not grow.

Ensure the dragon has no signs of having a object stuck in its throat, a blocked passage like a large cricket could be stuck preventing the dragon from eating, the object needs removing either if you can safely yourself or take your beardy to a vet. Ensure the dragon has not ingested any off or moldy food or poorly kept crickets. All of which will give the bearded dragon a upset tummy resulting in possible illness which leads to unwillingness to eat, medical attention needs to be sort. If the beardy has loss weight and is not eating try worming using reptile products, insect that are fed to beardy's can pass of these parasites there for a beardy with a gut full of worms will be uncomfortable and will not feel like eating. Of course always inform a vet and keep them updated and in any case you are concerned to a point you feel the life of the reptile could be at risk take it to a vet ASAP.
