This could be a conflicted sort of dream. You may be grieving over them, and you wish they were with you, but deep inside, you know and accept that they are dead. So you are keeping them alive in your mind, but because they are really dead, they cannot respond to you.

This can be a dream caused by an internal conflict. You know they are dead, but your heart may have trouble accepting that.
Conflicted or frustrated dreams are a common type of dream. You may have to use the toilet, but you may dream about not being able to do so. So constipation or urinary difficulty may be a part of the dream since deep down, you know you are sleeping and should not soil your bed. Likewise, you may have the urge to talk with your loved ones, but they don't respond because deep down, you know they are gone and thus cannot speak. So your subconscious mind tries to compromise.
