They could just be yawning, Or-This is called 'flehmening', and it is when the horse smells or tastes something unfamiliar, and is 'testing' it. It is very normal.Stallions often do this as a result of smelling, or sensing a mare in heat- however, geldings and spayed mares will still do this, because all horses are curious beasts.

Horses usually show their teeth when they smell an interesting aroma, or if they nibble you, they are being friendly. If they "bare" their teeth at you, however, that is not a happy horse, so i'd highly sugest staying away from it till in is in a better mood.
