when the temperature light is green means that the engine is cold and needs to be warmed up.

This symbol is the engine management light. It means that there is a fault somewhere on the car, a written warning of the fault will then usually flah up where you digital clock dial is.
While the engine light can mean a variety of things, it could simply mean you are low on motor oil. It could also mean that your oxygen sensor is bad. Disconnect the oxygen sensor and see if the ENGINE light goes out. If it does, you have discovered the reason why it went on to begin with. You can run your car without an oxygen sensor hooked up, but my experience has been that you do not get nearly the same milage as you would with it hooked up. It could also mean that your gas cap is not on or not on tight. A gas vapor leak triggers the Check Engine light.
It means that the engine is not warming up properly, possible thermostat failure.
