There are a few reasons. The main reason is that your muscles need oxygen to contract and when you exercise you need more oxygen. As your body gets use to the amount of oxygen you receive during this time of oxygen each day it gets easier to deal with, thus you start getting in shape. When you are done exercising your body is tired and needs oxygen after the muscles have contracted continuously.

After a good work-out, your abs should hurt. it means that you have improved your abs strength. just make sure to stretch your stomach afterwards, and the next day if your'e still sore.
