In boxing, a journeyman is a fighter who is in the ring to 'make the numbers up', so to speak. Journeymen enter into contests with losing records (eg. 35 losses, 1 win). They travel around on short-notice and fight in their opponent's backyward, hence the name 'journeyman'. Exciting young prospects are often put in against journeyman in order to gain valuable experience. Journeymen often fight four to six-rounders. They compete regularly (sometimes around two to three times a month). They are often very solid defensively, as their main focus is to avoid taking punishment from their opponent. They can sometimes spring shocks and upset a favoured boxer, although as they often compete as the 'away' fighter, they don't always get a fair crack at the whip from the ringside judges. Journeymen exist at all weight classes, including heavyweight.
