They are imaginary lines running north to south from the poles on Earth, e.g. the Prime Meridian. It can also be used to locate a place on a map.

Think of the Pirate remark that," X marks the spot". Except when looking at a map the X looks more like a + sign. Now think of one state only, like Kansas. You want to pin point a location in the state. You would move the + sign, side to side and up and down. To help you draw lines parallel to each other and equally distanced from each other across the map and down the map. then number them. 0,1,2, etc So now you have a bunch of squares across the state. 2 across and 4 down place you in a specific location. 4 across and 2 down a totally different place.

So what if the +sign was in the middle of one of those squares? Then we build a grid inside the square. Also numbering the squares. So 4 across 2 down square 14, gives us the location we want.

Now we take the numbers from all 3 areas we gave numbers to. Vertical lines Horizontal lines and grid boxes. We place them in a specific order so everyone does it the same way all the time. Now someone checking the numbers later would see 3 sets of numbers. The numbers that corresponds to the up and down line is our longitude line. The line that is side to side is the latitude and the final number corresponds to the box. In geography, longituderefers to the imaginary lines that bisect the globe through the North and South Poles (the ones that run vertically, as opposed to the lines of latitude that run horizontally, parallel to the equator).
The longitude is the angular distance of a place east or west of the meridian at Greenwich expressed in degrees and minutes.

Longitude is the angular distance west or east of an arbitrary geographic north-south line on the surface of the earth. The standard line used today is one running through Greenwich, England in the United Kingdom.

Longitude is measured as an angle (radians, grads, or most commonly degrees-minutes-and seconds of arc) not as distance. Because the earth is (approximately) a sphere a degree of longitude varies in length depending on its distance from the equator. At the equator a degree of longitude is one-nautical mile. At the poles, a degree has no length at all.

Longitude measures the angle east and west from the Prime Meridian, which is located in Greenwich, England. The Prime Meridian is the imagery line from North pole to South pole at zero degrees, which separates the western and eastern hemispheres. Any location east of zero degrees is measured as an angle from 0 to +180 degrees and any location west is measured from 0 to -180 degrees. The Anti-Meridian or 180th meridian is the line of longitude that is both +180 and -180, which basically follows the International Date Line (IDL). Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia are on one side of the IDL, with North and South America on the other side.

The 24 time zones around the world are based on longitude at intervals of 15 degrees with some exceptions due to country and territorial boundaries.

Longitude is the imaginary north-south lines that divide up the world (into 360 equal parts) so that you can tell how far east or west of the prime meridian (i.e. Greenwich, England) you are.

Longitude helps describe locations on a map. They are the vertical lines on a map. The horizontal lines are latitude.
