== == There is some guidance about the use of punishment on children.

Prov.13 [24] He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

Prov.23 [13] Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. [14] Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

Prov.29:15] The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

Sir.30 [1] He that loveth his son causeth him oft to feel the rod, that he may have joy of him in the end. === === == While the Bible does not specifically use the term 'child abuse' there is much of relevance contained in it. The above verses relate to loving guidance and discipline which corrects and instructs, not child abuse.

=== === === === == All of the principals taught by The Bible for Christians to follow apply equally to treatment of children as to anybody else. Love for others is the overwhelming message given to Christians, and it is this principal which distinguishes between loving and judiciously applied guidance with the intent of saving the child from an unhappy future, and an angry abusive episode of beating the living daylights out of a child. Anger and vengeance are not part of what a Christian is taught to do from Biblical teachings. They are clearly sinful ways for a person to respond.

The Bible is clearly against any act of sexual perversion, which obviously includes molesting children, and anyone who does so is out to gratify themselves at the expense of another human, and a helpless one at that. None of that falls under the teaching of loving others or nurturing little ones.

Ephesians 6:4

And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Matthew 18:6

But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Galatians 5:19-25

- covers many of the behaviors that lead to child abuse, and conversely the behaviors that prevent it.

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.Romans 13:10Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Add to this the multitude of other instructions and teachings for a Christian to follow, and the Bible clearly and comprehensively shows that no person has any business with abusing children as it is an abomination and against the principles of nurturing and training a child, and how we are to treat a fellow human being. == What is then discplining by "beating with a rod," was the norm during that time. But the paradigm has now changed and "beating with a rod" is now considered "child abuse." This leads to another question, but I digress. (NB: The original poster "digresses" because following up this thought leads to the Euthyphro dilemma, which has never been adequately addressed by theologians.) The first answer, specifically; Prov.23 [13] ....beatest him with the rod," [14] Thou shalt beat him with the rod,......" clearly refers to physical beating..

Is it child abuse to leave a seventeen year old home alone monthly?

It depends on the amount of time they are left alone. If the child has all necesities then I would say, no, it is not abuse. A 17-year-old is no longer a child so it is not child abuse. They should be getting a job or going to higher education.
