It means simply how many protons there are in an element. And and element is made up of the same types of atoms. If two elements or more are mixed, it is called a compound. Ex; Salt is a compound (mixture). It's made of Sodium (Na) and Chloride (Cl). Sodium and chloride are both separate elements. Salt is made of a certain type of atom and chloride is made with a different type.
