It also has water storage tissue. Depending upon the amount of stored water, the cactus is ribbed on the outside to expand or contract from top to bottom. Additionally, it's unique in having growth buds that are called areoles. From the areoles may grow spines, shoots, fruits, flowers, and branches.

Over 90% of a cactus plant's body parts are devoted to moving, processing, and storing nutrient solutions, photosynthetic products, and water. The more that the plant has of the preceding, the greater will be its width. The less it has, the smaller it will be. The cactus plant has a ribbed covering that contracts or expands with more or less contents inside.
