Bacterial chromosomes tend to be tethered to the plasma membrane of the bacteria. Unlike eukaryotic chromosomes, bacterial chromosomes are circular. In molecular Biology application, this allows for its isolation from plasmid DNA by centrifugation of lysed bacteria and pelleting of the membranes.

Many people think a chromosome has the sturcture of an "x" but this is actually what a chromosome looks like in metaphase. On the other hand normal chromosomes not during mitosis or meiosis are a single copies of a double stranded double helix made up of DNA.

The female chromosome looks like an X. The male's is a X, too, but it is called Y.

The chromosomes in bacteria are circular in order to avoid damage to the ends (which it now does not have since it is circular).
