An anacrusis is basically an extra bar at the begining of the music that doesn't add up to the time signature. It is used to create an upbeat or a sort of introduction note into the music. For example, in 4/4 you may have an anacrusis with 1 crotchet. After the anacrusis the music just carries on normally until the end when another extra bar is added to add up to the anacrusis. So in my example there would be a bar at the end that has a value of 3 crotchets.
