The prefix "pre" basically means before. A prefix comes before the base word, preschool is a place for lessons before you start school, precognition is knowing something before it happens.

If a word ever has the prefix pre at the beginning of it, it means to do something before something happens or it could be a past version of something. Like for example precaution. Which means to take a caution before something happens. Then there's other words like present. I know that has pre in it but that isn't one of them.
