Sport pilot and Recreational pilot certificates have almost the same restrictions:
flight only in daytime
flight no more than 2000 feet above the ground
no more than one passenger
must stay within 50 miles of your home airport
very restrictive airspace usage--you have to be endorsed by an instructor for each controlled airfield you want to use, for instance.
The difference in privileges is a Sport pilot can only fly Light Sport Aircraft, and a Recreational pilot can fly planes with up to 180-horsepower engines.
It takes about as much work to get a Private certificate as it does to get a Recreational certificate and you can do far more with the Private certificate...which is why people don't get the Recreational certificate any more. They either get a Sport certificate and fly light sport airplanes around their home areas for fun, or they get a Private certificate and fly general-aviation aircraft anywhere they want to go.

The recreational pilot certificate, in the United States, is a limited pilot certificate that allows pilots to fly in a confined area and distance from their point of departure. This compares to the private license in that it is easier to obtain (especially for older people).
medical certificate if required and an appropriate pilot certificate.
In order to be a private pilot you are required to have at least 30 hours of training to receive the recreational certificate. For a private pilot certificate you are required to have 40 hours of training.
Minimum requirements are a commercial pilot certificate, with a tailwheel endorsement and a pesticide applicator certificate in the state in which you will be operating.
No. You must be at least 16 to have student license.Minimum age requirements for the various airman certificates (i.e., pilot license certificates) are defined in 14 CFR part 61, Certification: Pilots and Flight Instructors, and Ground Inspectors as follows:Airline transport pilot (ATP) certificate: 23 yearsCommercial pilot certificate: 18 yearsPrivate pilot certificate: powered aircraft - 17 years;Private pilot certificate: gliders and balloons - 16 years;Student pilot certificate: powered aircraft - 16 years;Student pilot certificate: gliders and balloons - 14 years
The recreational pilot certificate was created by the FAA for "weekend" pilots, retired pilots, and pilots who cannot pass the FAA physical for the private pilots license. It is intended for pilots who fly for pleasure only and limits those pilots to daytime flying, aircraft with no more than four seats and powerplants of 180hp or less. Like a private pilots license, recreational pilots cannot fly for monetary compensation.A private pilot certificate has its own restrictions but a private pilot has the ability to attain further license endorsements to remove those restrictions.A private pilot may not fly in IFR weather until they have attained the IFR endorsement.A private pilot may not fly aircraft with more than a 200hp powerplant without the high-performance endorsement.A private pilot may not fly for monetary compensation without the commercial endorsement.A private pilot may not fly multi-engined aircraft without the multi-engine endorsement.A private pilot may not fly complex aircraft (aircraft with retractable gear and/or constant-speed prop) without the complex aircraft endorsement....and so on.The primary difference is that a private pilot usually intends to go on with their training and eventually attain these endorsements. The recreational certificate is intended for pilots who simply wish to fly on sunny days, just for fun, and has much less stringent requirements as far as training, currency, and medical. Many retired/older pilots who can no longer pass the FAA physical will opt for the recreational certificate so they can still fly for fun. Disabled people also can attain a recreational pilots license, but may have additional restrictions.
You must be at least 17 years of age. Hold at least a valid student pilot certificate/medical certificate. You must be proficient in the English language.

Technically a pilot is anyone who has flown an airplane. In the USA, there are several different levels of pilot certificates. They go:Student Pilot Certificate (can fly solo with a flight instructor signoff)Private Pilot Certificate (can fly with passengers, not for hire)Commercial Pilot Certificate (can fly for hire)Airline Transport Pilot Certificate (can fly as a captain for charter and airline operations)So a "pilot" is not necessarily better or worse than a private pilot.
you do not need to have a certificate to be a basketball coach for a parks and recreational team.
A recreational pilot license is required in order to pilot a private jet in the US.
The minimum age to acquire a recreational pilot's license is 17, and the minumum age for a student pilot's certificate is 16. The licensing authority is the Federal Aviation Administratioin so the requirement is the same in all states.
