Assuming that you are referring to an "S" directly under the date, that is the "mint mark" of the coin, and it signifies that it was produced at the San Francisco Mint. A "D" would signify Denver and no mintmark at all would signify Philadelphia.

Note that, from about 1980 onward, the Philadelphia mint has used a "P" mintmark for all coins except pennies (which continue to be without a mintmark).
