Ut stands for Atlantic Standard Time.

There are several different time zones that use the letters AST.

It can mean:

Alaskan Standard Time (GMT -7:00)

Atlantic Standard Time (GMT -4:00) on Canada's east coast.

Arabic Standard Time (GMT +3:00) in Iraq

Arab Standard Time (GMT +3:00) in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia

Arabian Standard Time (GMT +4:00) in the United Arab Emirates

Afghanistan Standard Time (GMT +4:30)

There are currently two time zones that share the abbreviation AST:

  • Atlantic Standard Time (UTC-4)
  • Arabia Standard Time (UTC+3)

AST is one of many ambiguous time zone designations. It stands for both Atlantic Standard Time (UTC-4) and Arabia Standard Time (UTC+3).

The people who control the time zone database not only tolerate ambiguous time zone designations, but the often create them themselves! In fact, they're doing it again in December 2014, making BST (British Summer Time) ambiguous on the 27th, when Bougainville Standard Time begins its existence. I absolutely refuse to play along with such an extremely idiotic practice, so I use my own abbreviations for most of the ambiguous ones, including AAST for Arabia Standard Time and BOUST for Bougainville Standard Time.
