It seems her favorites were the barbiturates such as seconal and nembutal. Those were replace by what we have today called benzodiazepine; valium, Ativan xanax and klonopin.

She started taking drugs early in childhood to sleep, for anxiety and stimulants to keep working. She seemed like a nervous woman and probably had terrible insomnia later in life which was why she had such a problem with the sedatives.

From accounts in biographies about her it seems she also drank a lot and likely used alcohol to get high and the drugs to calm her nerves. It was likely the combination of things that resulted in her death. They didn't have much in the way of treating addiction back in her day.

She was one of the most talented people ever and should have been very rich but she died broke which was heartbreaking. She had a hard life but brought so much good to the world through her movies and singing. She will always be loved.
