Asteroids do varying amount of damage depending on their size. Large asteroids like the one that caused the Chicxulub crater in Mexico (the one that is believed to have wiped out the dinosaurs) are so powerful they could probably cover the entire planet in debris and throw so much dust into the air that it would block out sunlight. Thus causing an ecosystem collapse. However some are much smaller. Some are so small they burn up in the atmosphere or cause very little damage.
