Why is hard water undesirable?

Couple of reasons, "Hard" water- water with a lot of dissolved minerals- usually calcium, does not work with with soaps or detergents. It is hard to "lather" with hard water, and you use more cleaning product to get the same effect. Second, the minerals can be deposited in pipes, fixtures and appliances, clogging or wearing them prematurely.

Does soap and detergents have the same effects in all water?

No; detergents have different recipes, but sometimes these are similar.

Can water be purified using detergents?

phosphate :)

Water hardness due to?

We often talk about water of different qualities in our daily life and very often we are faced with certain problems caused by hard water. The total hardness (TH) consists of all calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) salts dissolved in it. Water hardness consists of two types of hardness, carbonate, and non-carbonate. Carbonate hardness consists of calcium and magnesium bicarbonates Ca(HCO3)2 and Mg(HCO3)2. Non-carbonate hardness consists of all their other salts such as chlorides, nitrates, sulfates, etc. After washing in hard water, stains from precipitated limescale remain which are very difficult to remove, textiles washed in β€œhard” water become stiff due to the deposition of limescale on fine textile fibers, and washing in hard water consumes more detergents due to the reaction of detergents with hardness salts and, creation of insoluble soaps – soap scum. Using soft water can solve all these problems.

How do detergents and other cleaners get into the water cycle?

they get mixed into mater water bodies. At the time of rain they move from small water bodies to large water bodies.

Can you use soaps and synthetic detergents to check the hardness of water?

Soaps get precipitated as insoluble calcium and magnesium soaps in hard water but detergents do not. Therefore, soaps but not synthetic detergents can be used to check the hardness of water.

What are the advantages of synthetic detergents over soap?

The advantages of synthetic detergents over soaps are :Synthetic detergents can be used even in case of hard water whereas soaps fail to do so. Unlike soaps, detergents do not form insoluble calcium and magnesium salts in hard water. They give lather in hard water also.Synthetic detergents can be used in the acidic medium while soaps fail to do so because of their hydrolysis to free acids.Synthetic detergents are soluble in water and hence form more lather than soaps.Synthetic detergents have a better cleansing action than soaps.Detergents do not cause irritation to the skin while soaps have this problem.

Why are detergents more effective than soaps for cleaning in hard water?

The reason detergents are more effective than soap for cleaning hard water has to do with their ingredients and their function. Most detergents have cleaning properties that are able to combat hard water and mildew. The function of soap, however, is less complex. The function of water is to make water even wetter than what it is. This does not necessarily mean it contains cleaning properties.

Advantage of soaps over synthetic detergents?

Soaps and detergents act differently in hard water and soft water respectively..over use of detergents causes water pollution wich can be avoided by using soaps...........wich causes much less pollution.

What is the main problem with hard water for most people?

It interferes with the foaming of soap and detergents.

Why do soaps and detergents have different effects in different types of water?

soaps use natural fats that can get removed from solution by hard water salts, like magnesium and calcium. Detergents use enzymes that attack specific stains, and can clean, even in water containing hard water salts.

Does the hard water have a greater emulsifying power than soap or deterget yes or no?

The question should be (I guess)..."Which would have a greater emulsifying power in 'hard' water, soaps or detergents?". The answer to that question is certainly the detergent. (Further, fyi, shampoos are great emulsifiers in hard water compared with the two.)*Please see molecular structures of soaps and detergents to understand how and why detergents emulsify more than soaps.

What mineral is used in laundry detergents?

The most common mineral which is used in laundry detergent are phosphates. This is used in detergents to remove hard water minerals in clothing.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using detergents instead of soap in hard water areas?

detergents, unlike soap, do not react with the magnesium and calcium salts found in hard water to form scum. they are more efficient cleaners than soap. but they can be very harsh on skin/hair for humans and also, some types of detergents are non biogedradable.
