Catholic Answer

That depends upon how it is received. If the Eucharist is received by a believing, baptized Christian in a state of grace (having been to confession, etc.) and with full intent (making an intentional prayer, etc.) then the effect is to communicate the graces Christ merited on Calvary to the recipient: to enlighten and strengthen the believer by nourishing his soul for eternal life. On the other hand, to receive Our Blessed Lord in the Eucharist if you are not baptized, or not in a state of grace (having committed a serious sin and not repented of it in confession) or unthinkingly (without serious intent) then one is eating God's judgment on himself, which is why St. Paul says that some Christians are weak and some have died because they are eating their own judgment.
