The southern states considered themselves to be separate and independent countries (or states) joined together for the common defense, while the northern portion of the country felt as though we were one country with separate jurisdictions.

The issue of slavery was one of the central issues, but did not become a defining point until after the war started. There were northern states that has slaves as well as black soldiers fighting for the south.

Slavery was still an established trade after the end of the war, but did become illegal several months after the end of the war.
