Britain and France were both pro-Confederate, and might well have sent miitary aid, if Lincoln had not wrong-footed them by officially turning the war into a crusade against slavery.
Britain was pleased to see its economic rival, the USA, in trouble.
France was wanting influence in Mexico, and it would suit them if there were a new pro-French nation in-between Mexico and the USA.
First, the string of victories by Lee in the summer, which made the Confederates look like winners, who would be worth backing with official recognition and military aid.
Second, Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in September, which turned the war into an official crusade against slavery, so that free nations abroad could not help the South without looking pro-slavery themselves.
My opinion....The Civil War.
That's an opinion. Some people think it was World War 1, World War 2, Vietnam, the Revolutionary War, and possibly the Civil War.
They expected help from Europe because Europe was supposed to give them money and supplies during the Civil War. B====D
The prevailing opinion of the people from both sides was that the war would be short and nearly bloodless.
The main reason was states rights.

Many People (Friends) disagreed about their opinion on the Civil war, so many relationships were ruined because of the disagreements.
Because blacks would never have an opinion.
