Britain and France were both pro-Confederate, and might well have sent miitary aid, if Lincoln had not wrong-footed them by officially turning the war into a crusade against slavery.

Britain was pleased to see its economic rival, the USA, in trouble.

France was wanting influence in Mexico, and it would suit them if there were a new pro-French nation in-between Mexico and the USA.

First, the string of victories by Lee in the summer, which made the Confederates look like winners, who would be worth backing with official recognition and military aid.

Second, Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in September, which turned the war into an official crusade against slavery, so that free nations abroad could not help the South without looking pro-slavery themselves.
