Matter comes together to form stars under the force of gravity. Gravity is a force that causes all objects to attract each other with different amounts of force depending on their masses and their distance.
In a random cloud of gas that is big enough, all pieces attract each other and they eventually gather together, and then the big pieces attract the others in. That does not stop until enough temperature is generated to start nuclear fusion, and the star settles into a stable size for the first few billion years of its life.

∙ 8y agoEveryone believes it's gravity. It couldn't be electromagnetic forces because that is polarised and like charges repel each other. It could not be either of the nuclear forces because they operate over extremely tiny distances.
