The Brontë sisters - Charlotte, Emily, and Anne - are often credited with bridging the gap between romanticism and realism in literature. Their novels, such as "Jane Eyre" and "Wuthering Heights," combine elements of both literary movements by exploring themes of passion and emotion within a realistic setting. These works are known for their complex characters and vivid portrayal of human experiences, making them influential in the transition between the two literary periods.
I recently took a college course titled "The Novel from 1700 to 1900" and for our final paper we were to show how Gothicism was used as a vehicle to move from Romanticism to Modernism. While Modernism is not the same as Realism, they do share many common qualities. The first three books of the course leading from Romanticism to Gothicism were Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and Hard Times by Charles Dickens. The novels that started the height of Gothicism and gradually led to Modernism were The Monk by Matthew Lewis, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, and finally The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. While all of the novels mentioned arguably have some elements of Romanticism, Gothicism, and Modernism, upon reading them you can see how they style of each book shows a gradual movement from Romanticism to Modernism. Hope this helps! (I answered the question before I became a member:))
