In the U.S., different police departments use different guns. As far as handguns go, Glock has 60% or so of the market. Sig has a pretty good percentage of the rest, and there are a few others that have the remainder. In some small cities, individual officers can carry anything they want, but in many large cities, the department usually has a specific model that officers are required to carry.

Depends on the agency or state, the department will decide on what sidearm will be authorized, then all patrol vehicles are usually issued a shotgun and sometimes an assault rifle, usually you only use your handgun.

Added: The ammunition of most police sidearms is represented by the following: 9 mm - 10 mm -.38 Special - .357 Mag - .40 cal - .45 cal.

The sidearms themselves are representative of many reputable US and foreign manufacturers, the semi-automatics most commonly designed for high capacity magazines.

Different police departments issue different guns. There is no one official gun.

the most commonly found in the USA is the 9mm

Actually, since the 1990s, the .40 S&W has become one of the more common calibers. Glock pistols are the most common (Glock holds something like 50 or 60 percent of the entire police market worldwide). Sig Sauer holds a fair percentage of the market also. The remaining percentage is held by various manufacturers.

Many large departments issue one certain gun. For instance, the local city and county departments where I live issues Sig Sauer pistols. One of the small departments in the area issues H&Ks, another small department issues Glocks...all in .40 S&W. Some small departments, especially in rural areas, allow their officers to carry any gun they can qualify with, however, that isn't as common.

It depends on the locality. In most U.S. police departments, the commanders choose which guns the officers can carry, and each police department has its own requirements for what gun they will choose. Glock and Sig Sauer are two of the most common in the U.S. but certainly not the only two.

Usually pistols

.38 Police Special

Actually, not very many departments issue .38s any more. Most departments issue semi-automatics. Glock holds 65 or 70 percent of the entire U.S. police market. Most of the rest of it is held by Sig, H&K and a few others. A very few small departments let officers carry whatever they want to, but that's mostly very small rural departments where there are only a few officers.

Glock 27-29 or 9mm

First, SOME American departments issue Glocks, but not all.

Second, the Glock 27 is not a 9mm, it's a .40SW. The Glock 28 is a .380 that isn't widely available in the U.S. The Glock 29 is a 10mm. None of those are very common in the U.S. for police departments.

The most common are either the 22 or 23 which are both .40, or the 19 or 17 which are both 9mm.

That said, Glock pistols are issued to about 60 percent of the police officers in the U.S. The other 40 or so percent is made of up other guns. Sig, Beretta, Smith and Wesson and a few others are very common.

Each individual department issues whichever gun it sees fit. In the area where I live, the city issues Sig 229s and the county issues Sig 226s to its patrol officers, however, detectives and command personel are issued smaller guns, the Sig 239. One other local city issues H&Ks.
