Sound waves are like ripples in a pond that radiate around the object. An aeroplane travelling at sub-sonic speed will be travelling behind the sound that it has emitted. When the aeroplane reaches the exact speed of sound, the sound it is producing will accompany it on its journey. This can be very dangerous. Why? Because while it is travelling at the speed of sound, there will be a continuous build up of sound around the aircraft. As new sounds are produced, the aircraft will fly along with those new sounds.

What is the sound when a plane flies faster than the speed of light?

As soon as the plane speeds up to go faster than sound, it may generate a 'sonic boom', which continues to sweep over the ground wherever the plane flies. Faster than that, there's no particular magic speed at which anything new suddenly magically happens. No aircraft, balloon, rocket ship, bullet, or anything else can fly faster than the speed of light.

Two planes are flying at the speed of sound Plane X is flying at an altitude of 6000 feet and plane Y is flying at an altitude of 15000 feet which is flying faster?

As altitude increases (to about 35,000 ft) air density, pressure and temperature all drop. As density decreases speed of sound increases, but with drop in pressure it drops; these two practically cancel each other out. As temperature drops, speed of sound drops. Thus at 15,000 ft the speed of sound is slower than at 6,000 ft so plane X is flying faster than plane Y.

Why you see the fighter plane first but hear the plane later?

Because it is travelling faster than the speed of sound, the sound comes later. However, if a fighter plane was slower than the speed of sound, you'd see the plane first.

What strange thing happens to this plane in faster-than-sound flight?

In faster-than-sound flight, a plane can experience a shockwave known as a sonic boom. This is caused when the plane reaches and exceeds the speed of sound, resulting in a sudden, loud noise like a thunderclap. It is a strange phenomenon that can be disruptive and alarming for those on the ground.
