The games in Rome are known today as the bloodiest exhibitions of public entertainment known to mankind. Men, women and children flocked to the Colosseum to watch the bloodthirsty fighter's murder one another. They even cheered them on and screamed for them to kill a warrior lying almost dead on the ground. The gladiators had no problem killing one another because being a gladiator was an occupation for social outcasts and barbaric men.

The gigantic Colosseum, built around 80 AD, seated 50,000 people. The people came from all over the Roman Empire and regions of Africa, Italy, and Rome. The games became a way of entertaining the wealthy, as well as the common people. Most would set all day and watch as men fought with one another and also with animals such as lions, bears, and even buffaloes.

The Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre) continued to be after the fall of Rome to Germanic armies in 478 AD. It was fortified into a castle around 1200 AD, then badly damaged by an earthquake in 1349, after which much of its stone and bronze was removed for repairing other buildings. It remained a quarry until consecrated by Benedict XIV in 1749, after which it was maintained as a archaeological and visitor's site as it is today.

The Roman Colosseum of ancient Rome remains as a ruin in the modern city of Rome. The Colosseum is an amphitheatre that was begun by the Emperor Vespasian in 72 AD BCE and recently captured peoples from Judea were among its first construction labor. In 80 AD CE Vespasian's son, the emperor Titus completed it in 80 AD CE.

It was a huge amphitheater that could hold almost 80,000 spectators.

For the most part the Colosseum ( it's a nickname, original name is Flavian Amphitheater ) was used for entertainment. Roman entertainment for this huge arena came in the form of gladiator combats, wild beasts vs gladiators, and for the mass deaths of criminals and early Christian martyrs.

The arena was able to be flooded to hold mock naval battles. Many times the crews involved were criminals or gladiators.

Most died. The men fighting there were men taken as prisoners of war and were from all over the ancient world. They were slaves and owned by rich men who invested in them and trained them in schools. Historians have found they were kept well fed and got the best medical attention at the time. A few fought so well they were given Roman citizenship and freed.
