But the western historical record is silent about events in Suriname in 1490. Suriname wasn't discovered by English, French, and Spanish explorers until the 16th century. It's thought that the indigenous tribes encountered by the explorers had been inhabiting the area since as far back as 3000 B.C. So any record of whatever may have happened in 1490 must come from any oral histories or folklore that may have been preserved or from such documentary art as cave paintings or painted pottery that may be found.
