The Japanese forced 75,000 Filipino and American prisoners to march 60 miles through the Bataan Peninsula of the Philippines. Only 54,000 managed to make it to Camp O'Donnell where they were held for 3 years. Thousands died at the camp due to starvation and disease and being killed by the Japanese.

The Battle of Bataan was fought between the American forces guarding the-then US "protectorate" of The Philippines and their Filipino allies against the invading Japanese during the early days of American involvement in WWII; it takes it's name from the Bataan Penisula of the island of Luzon, largest of the Philippine's more than 7100 islands. By all accounts, the US-Filipino defense was valiant, but it proved insufficient to stem the overwhelming odds faced against crack Japanese troops hardened by years of conflict in China; the U.S. & Filipino forces were overcome relatively quickly, and only a small portion was able to flee to the last line of defense (the island of Correigdor in nearby Manila Bay, whose defenders, also, were ultimately forced into surrender). The troops captured by the Japanese after the Battle of Bataan were largely forced to endure the infamous "Bataan Death March", to prisoner-of-war (POW) camps elsewhere on Luzon, in which many thousands of prisoners died.
