The Russo-Japanese war (1904-1905) was a competition for control of Manchuria, Korea and ports in northern China. The Russians wanted a warmer Pacific port because theirs would freeze in the winter. The Japanese had learned the value of Imperialism from the Europeans, and were staking out Eastern Asia as their own sphere of influence. The war cost Russia most of their most powerful naval vessels, not to mention their international prestige, and it also weakened them militarily in Europe.

The first great war of the 20th century: Tsarist Russia dispatched two of her battleship fleets to fight the Japanese battleship fleets at the Yellow Sea and Tsushima Strates. The former was a draw; the latter a Japanese victory.

The Russian Army was dispatched across the Eurasian continent via the newly constructed Siberian Railroad to the region near present day North Korea. There the Russian & Japanese armies clashed from 1904 to 1905.
