The fate of the colonists is unknown. There are many theories including their having moved south to merge with the friendly natives, moving west on to the mainland, moving north to the Chesapeake Bay. Some may have tried to sail back to England. We just don't know.

The Jamestown colony in what is now Virginia began badly. There was disease, lack of clean water, and an inability to properly grow food. Also, the first colony developed a dreadful relationship with the American Natives causing conflict and bloodshed.

In the 1400's there was an attempt in Newfoundland and then in 1584 Roanoke Island. Roanoke is most commonly considered to be the first attempt depending on the historian.
