France was devastated after the war. Most of the fighting on the Western front was in France. The countryside and many villages were destroyed. Moreover, with over a million men dead (they had the highest casualty percentage against men mobilised of all major participants), French society suffered incalculable damage. There was a dramatic drop in the birthrate in the following years. And the state spent a tremendous amount to care for the millions of wounded that survived the carnage. The number of amputees (and other disabled) alone required dramatic alterations to major public transportation systems. Mental wards were filled with shell-shocked soldiers that never fully recovered. Thousands of kids became orphans.

France went on to build a string of forts along their border during the inter-war years called the Maginot Line. The war-weary nation wanted desperately to prevent a third invasion by Germany since 1870. But war broke out again in 1939. Although the forts themselves were architectural and defensive marvels, the Germans evolved a plan to simply by-pass them by again violating Belgian neutrality. France was knocked out of the war in a matter of weeks during the Spring of 1940. Clearly, the effects of the previous war had taken its toll.
