After 3 planes were seen over Japan, the Japanese though they were weather planes so the attack came 45 minutes after the "all clear". Because of the lack of warning and the populace's indifference to small groups of planes, the explosion came as an almost complete surprise, and the people had not taken shelter. Many were caught in the open, and most of the rest in flimsily constructed homes or commercial establishments.

Because of the flat terrain and circular shape of the city, Hiroshima was uniformly and extensively devastated. In this case, humanity was more devastated that the land itself since the bombs were detonated at about 2,000 feet in the air.

In a 1 mile radius of ground zero, almost all buildings were destroyed by the blast of x-ray heated air that caused an enormous shockwave, which travelled at the speed of sound. The fireball, which was roughly 370m in diameter, instantly killed any people within, and ignited all flammable material. With fuel readily available from destroyed buildings, a firestorm quickly spread to the entire 2 mile diameter of the shockwave. Around 140,000 people are thought to have died from the effects of the bomb.
