Rosa Parks sat in the colored section of the bus to ride home from work. When the section reserved for whites was filled, the driver moved the sign for black seating past the row where Rosa was sitting and told her she had to get up, she said no.

In the past, when Rosa had refused to comply with the segregation rules on the bus, she was put off the bus. But this time she was arrested. She has been best known for what happened that day.

On Thursday, December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks sitting on a seat in the front row of seats assigned to black people refused the drivers instructions to clear that row of seats to make room for a white person that had boarded the bus. James F. Blake, the driver instructed the black people her row to move back and create a new row for the whites. the other black people in her row did as they were told, however Rosa refused. As a result she was arrested for failing to obey the driver's seat assignments. There was no city ordinance that explicitly mandated segregation, but there was giving the the bus driver authority to assign seats. She was found guilty on December 5,and was fined $10 plus court cost of $4, however appealed. A boycott of the buses was triggered by her arrest which was detained to be very costly as the majority of its passengers were black.
