If you take Methotrexate as part of your treatment for Arthritis you should consider your reasons for doing this carefully. I had to have an operation a short while ago and as a result was not allowed methotrexate prior to and shortly after the opperation as it isan immune suppressant something you don't need with bone surgery. In my case it was a simple case of just not taking it any more until a week after the operation
In my experience Methadone is one of the hardest drugs to withdraw from. Fortunately most people do it without serious consequences like seizures and even death. The clients in my institution who were immediately stopped from their treatment on arrival took upwards of 10, even 12 days before the symptoms subsided. This was in regard to such things as oxycodone and hyrocodone as well as heroin, which could be free of symptoms of withdrawal in as little as 2-3 days. The symptoms were abdominal cramping, fever, hot and cold sweats, aches and pains, trembling, and shakes, as well as nausea and vomiting, and diarrhea. Over the counter medicines for each and every symptom were given as the symptoms were experienced, but their help was limited. In some cases of serious vomiting we did administer Phenergan or generic promethazine 25 to 50 mg by rectal suppository every 6 hours if necessary, and no Allergies to this drug were noted.
Ii have been taking methadone for 4 years or so now and am (to be frank) sick and tired of it!!! Because of this I have been searching for answers on if, and how I can get off of it sooner. Unfortunately the only solution I have been able to get is the gradual and extremely slow taper the doctors recommend!! So I was addicted to Oxycontin for about a year or so and that has now turned into a 5 year struggle with no end to it that I can see yet!! If you are thinking of taking methadone please give it a lot of thought!! It probably saved my life but if there was any other way I could have done it i wish I would have! Good luck :)
that is hard to say Methotrexate is a DMARD (disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug) The reason it works is not totally understood aside from that it reduces certain affects of the immune system. In any case If you have found that MTX was effective in stopping the inflammation of RA you are in a position where unless the disease has gone into remission you should keep taking it. While you are taking it thee is no way of knowing whether you have gone into remission. However what ever way you look at it there is still no cure for RA so if you had it before you took MTX then you will still have it after you stop taking it. this means that when you stop taking it it wile return, Along with the ongoing damage that comes with the disease (unless the RA happens to be in remission at the time) I have stopped taking MTX for short periods the weekly dose before and after an operation. and once the dose before and 2 after a course of antibiotics for a lung infection that was caused by flu. by the end of that time I could feel that some inflammation was returning. so my guess is that so long as there are no nasty side effects the doctor will keep you on MTX for as long as he can. The only way to know what happens if you stop taking it is to stop taking it and see what happens. Keep in mind however that it takes MTX time to start working so if you stop taking it while it is suppressing the RA you are stuck with the symptoms and possible damage until you have it working again if the symptoms return.
Methotrexate is a drug that causes changes to take place in the immune system that has been found to cause it not to react to certain stimulus. in other words it stops inflammation in certain situations like those experienced in RA. If you stop taking it you may find that you will experience more inflammation again which in turn will lead to irreversible damage of joints and problems with other tissue in the body. However you may very well be using it for nothing, the best way to find out if you still need it is to stop using it for a time. if you find that your symptoms return I sagest you start with it again as soon as you can to avoid further joint damage. this is the opinion of a layman that uses methotrexate not that of a doctor or rheumatologist it may be best to discus this with your doctor.
We hope you are not saying that you would trust what you hear on this site more than what you are told by your doctor! When it comes to anything related to medicines or medical care, your doctor's instructions are always the instructions to follow. If you have reason to question what your doctor has told you, then checking with another doctor or with an experienced RN or nurse practitioner is the way to go.

It is largely unadvisable to consume alcohol whilst taking leflunomide (or its sister drug, teriflunomide). There is a known risk of liver damage in patients taking leflunomide and alcohol increases the risk of this occurring.
