The debt remains "owed" even if the child attains age 18. Until every dime is paid, the person liable for making those payments is required by law to continue. Doing otherwise would be in contempt of court, and could result in heavy fines and/or prison time.

Jail if you are more then 2 to 3,000 but if you show the judge you are trying your hardest don't leave state ( abandonment) and show up to your court appearances he will give you plenty of more time to make your payments!!!

ANSWER

It is illegal to jail someone in the US for a debt. Rather, it is a matter of being in Contempt of Court. However, the states can no longer afford to do this to any great extent.

At the request of the custodial parent or to recover assistance provided, the State may take various actions to collect past-due support, including garnishing wages, intercepting tax refunds and other government payments, placing liens on bank accounts, real estate and other assets, requesting suspension of drivers license, requesting revocation of passport, and/or asking the courts to put the obligor in jail for contempt.

Prosecuted for contempt of court.

Failure to pay court-ordered child support is a big deal; usually a felony. Some of the way the courts can force child support payments are wage garnishment, driver's license suspension, block passport application, imprisonment, and many other legal recources. See related links to read the law and get more details.

They can take it out of your salary and eventually put you in prison if you continue to refuse to pay. State child support enforcement agencies have sweeping powers that can be used to collect child support arrears. They can take your tax refund, freeze your bank account and record a lien against your real property.
