Temples are where people can get away from the busy and sometimes sinful world and worship their god. In the LDS church we believe that temples are houses of God and you have to be worthy to enter. In a LDS temple there are baptism for the dead. This is where we baptize people, by proxy, who have already died and gone into heaven into our church. We also have weddings in our temples. As i said before not all people can enter in a temple, only the ones with a temple recomend, so the weddings aren't open to non-members. In the weddings we get sealed to our spouse for time and all eternity. This means that after death we are still married in heaven. I've never attended a temple wedding because, of course, i wasn't born when my parents got married and haven't had the chance to go to one because i wasn't old enough to get a temple recomend. you have to be at least 12 years old and worthy. These are just some of the things that go on in LDS temples.

Temples of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) are typically open Tuesday through Saturday, although some may be open on Monday. Each Temple sets it's own schedule, but all temples offer the same services each day.

The services available at a Mormon Temple are:

*Baptisms performed on behalf of deceased ancestors - Mormons believe that if they are baptized in behalf of their dead ancestors, that ancestor will have the opportunity to accept salvation through Jesus Christ in the afterlife.

*Washing, Annointing, and Endowment for the living and the deceased - These symbolic ceremonies allow an individual to make certain promises with God and qualify them for church leadership positions. Once a living individual has participated, they may return to perform the ordinances on behalf of their deceased ancestors.

*Sealing of couples or families for the living and the deceased - Mormons believe that if they are 'sealed' to their parents, spouse, and children through a Temple ceremony, they will be reunited in the afterlife. When a couple is married in the temple, this is the ceremony they participate in.

Saturday tends to be a busy day at all temples, since most people have the day off work. Also, couples being married or 'sealed' often choose Friday or Saturday, since weekends are popular days for weddings and wedding receptions.

Please note that a Mormon Temple is different from a Mormon Meetinghouse. A Meetinghouse is where regular worship services, classes, and congregation activities are held. While meetinghouses are open every day, worship and most classes are held on Sunday.

Is it possible to be sealed in the Mormon temple after a civil marriage?

Yes. This is actually extremely common. Married couples who convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) are encouraged to be sealed in the temple. Additionally, Mormon couples who were unable or unworthy to be sealed in the temple on their wedding day are encouraged to have a civil ceremony and then be sealed in the temple later on. Also, some countries require couples to have a civil ceremony before they can be sealed in the temple, because they do not recognize the temple sealing as a legal marriage. While being sealed in the temple on your wedding day is the ideal, it only happens about half the time, and possibly less often than that.
