The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires the manufacturers to place an expiry date on medication containers. This having been said, most medications are stable compounds and should last for ten years in an unopened container (not subjected to temperature extremes) and two years after the container is opened. This does not apply to relatively unstable compounds like acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin).
Some are, it really depends on what medicine you are talking about
I am sure though that if you are talking about any type of insulin for diabedics, that experation dates really do matter.
Medicines expire for the same reason that food expires. Both are made of organic substances which are not perfectly stable, and which change over time. Some volatile substances evaporate, others undergod slow chemical changes. The drug or the food get stale.
Hopefully, you throw it away.
There are so many different medications that can do so many severely detrimental things to you and your system after the expiration date that the only reasonable thing to do is throw it out. Unless, of course, you like the idea of permanent liver damage and death.
