The air you exhale normally contains 19% less oxygen than inhaled air, with a 4% to 5% level of carbon dioxide and other gases, along with added water vapor. (Which is why you can rebreathe it to control "hiccups".) Your body will continue to remove the remaining oxygen and add more carbon dioxide until the exhaled air is almost all nitrogen and CO2.

So if you had only this air to breathe, your body would not be able to keep functioning and you could pass out and eventually die. This is the same situation as when one or more persons are trapped in a closed space with a limited amount of air.

The considerable oxygen content (17%) in exhaled air allows mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in CPR.

What happens during inhalation and exhalation?

Inhalation is the process of taking air into the lungs. For this to occur, the air pressure inside the lungs must be lower than that of the external atmosphere as air flows fr

How do inhaled and exhaled air differ?

The percentage of O2 and CO2 differ greatly in inhalation and exhalation. CO2 levels tend to be higher in exhaled air as it is a metabolic waste product. O2 levels tend to be

What is exhaled air and inhaled air?

Exhaled air - is the carbon dioxide that we breath out as a product of cellular respiration. Inhaled air is the oxygen we take in that is required for the process of cellular

What are the components of inhaled and exhaled air?

What we breathe in is far from pure oxygen, but roughly by volume 78 per cent nitrogen, 21 per cent oxygen, 0.965 per cent argon and 0.04 per cent carbon dioxide (plus some he

What happens to your ribcage as you inhale and exhale?
