Why is it deadly to mix ammonia with bleach?

Because the giant warning on the bottle in bright red print with a skull and cross bones isn't enough, hundreds of people are wheeled into emergency rooms every year after mixing a deadly combination of ammonia and bleach- a corrosive concoction that can cause the lungs to fill with liquid. Household bleach is 5% sodium hypochlorite. Mix it with ammonia and mono- and di-chloramines are formed. These nasty fellows will cause lovely symptoms such as respiratory tract irritation, tearing, and nausea. To make things better, add water to get hydrochloric acid and nascent oxygen- also known as chlorine gas, the chemical weapon of choice of Nazi Germany in World War II- for the added bonus of drowning in your own fluids! Should a person misguidedly join these two in a most unholy matrimony, they may feel fine for a short period of time until they notice white spots in their peripheral vision. (That would be the lack of oxygen to the brain.) Then they may feel woozy. Then if they're lucky, they'll wake up on a gurney in the emergency room with a breathing tube down their throat and a totally hot doctor-- who probably thinks they are an idiot. As a rule of thumb, never mix any household cleaners together, ever- as many of them have either a bleach or ammonia base. In the quest for a supercleaner, you'll have to use that good ol' fashioned never-fail product- elbow grease!

What happens when you combine bleach and ammonia.?

It will make Chlorine Gas (among other deadly things) That warning is there to protect you. Household bleach has a chemical formula of NaOCl - that is, one atom each of sodium, oxygen, and chlorine. Its chemical name, for the curious, is sodium hypochlorite. Ammonia has a chemical formula of NH 3 , that is, one atom of nitrogen and three atoms of hydrogen. When these two compounds are combined, the following reaction takes place: 2NaOCl + 2NH 3 --> 2NaONH 3 + Cl 2 . Do you see that Cl 2 on the right hand side there? This means one part chlorine gas, made up of diatomic (two-atom) molecules. It also means that the chlorine gas has been liberated from the bleach, and is quite capable of causing you harm when inhaled! Nitrogen Trichloride (very toxic) Another potential reaction, which occurs when a greater amount of bleach is added than ammonia, is this: 3NaOCl + NH 3 --> 3NaOH + NCl 3 That's sodium hydroxide and nitrogen trichloride. Nitrogen trichloride is a very toxic chemical to humans, and even if you did get close enough to ingest it, it would probably explode in your face first, as it is also a very volatile explosive. There is little necessity in explaining why that is bad. Hydrazine (explosive rocket fuel) Another reaction can occur if you have more ammonia than bleach. It is a three-part process. The first reaction produces sodium hydroxide and chloramine. NH 3 + NaOCl --> NaOH +NH 2 ClThese products react with more ammonia. NH 3 + NH 2 Cl + NaOH -->N 2 H 4 + NaCl + H 2 O. N 2 H 4 is hydrazine, a very unstable compound. Then a final reaction between hydrazine and dichloramine occurs. 2NH 2 Cl + N 2 H 4 --> 2NH 4 Cl + N 2 . This reaction produces so much heat that it usually causes an explosion..

What happens when you inhale ammonia and bleach?

Ammonia and Bleach create Chlorine gas. Which causes respiratory damage that will lead to death if enough is inhaled. Oh and it's painful. Warning to all who like to clean the toilet by letting a bit of bleach soak in it: Make these restrooms off limits to the kids, or better yet, wait until after they are asleep. My son urinated in the toilet after I had left bleach in it to soak. He came running out with his pants down to escape the odor. Urine has just enough ammonia in it apparently to create a mini "mustard gas" reaction.

What happens when you mix bleach and pinesoL?

WHAT IS CHLORINE? . Chlorine is a poisonous, greenish-yellow gas described as having a choking odor. It is a very corrosive, hazardous chemical. Usually combined with other chemicals, it is used to disinfect water, purify metals, bleach wood pulp and make other chemicals.. Household bleach, used to whiten fabrics or remove mold from surfaces, is a 5% solution of a stabilized form of chlorine.. Do Not Mix household bleach with base-containing or ammonia-containing cleaners. Dangerous levels of a very harmful gas can be released.. Most of the chlorine that enters lakes, streams, or soil evaporates into the air or combines with other chemicals into more stable compounds. Chlorine-containing chemicals that seep through soil down into groundwater can remain unchanged for many years.

Bleach and baking soda do not explode. They are commonly used toimprove the results from each. In other words, if you mix both whenyou are cleaning something, it will be more effective. Yes. Ammonia will react with the sodium hypochlorite in bleach toproduce a number of toxic gasses.

What happens when you mix hydrogen peroxide with ammonia?

The asker added, "I am looking to destroy SO2 accumulation in a gas system". In my opinion, you'd be likely to get a reaction between the ammonia (NH3) and the peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). I'm not sure whether the sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) would be preferentially affected by the peroxide, but if it were, you'd likely get sulfur trioxide (SO 3 ), which dissolves in H 2 O to produce H 2 SO 4 -- sulfuric acid. As for a reaction between the peroxide and the ammonia -- based on limited experience, I believe there are several possibilities, and that the products you got would be dependent upon temperatures.

What happens when you mix bleach with Lysol?

NOTE: MSDS sheets specifically say "Do Not Mix With Bleach" forLysol Concentrate, and Lysol IC. Lysol IC at least contains Quat.Ammonium! NEVER USE BLEACH and Ammonia! Pre-Mixed Lysol productswith bleach are primarily Bleach, and don't contain " LYSOL" asabove. I believe the following answer is WRONG, possibly Dangerous. You get a better cleaner. You can actually buy Lysol pre-mixed withbleach. It is never a good idea to mix two chemicals together, however inthis case there are no negative side effects. Just make sure youare mixing it with only bleach. Not another cleaner containingbleach, as this could cause a problem.

What happens when you combine bleach and ammonia?

When you combine bleach and ammonia, the two react to form manytoxic products, including chloramine, dichloramine, nitrogentrichloride and hydrazine. But, if the reaction goes through allthe way, it forms non-toxic nitrogen. The equation is as followed: NH3+NaOCl --> NH2Cl+NaOH NH2Cl+NaOCl --> NHCl2+NaOH NHCl2+NaOCl --> NCl3+NaOH NH3+NH2Cl+NaOH --> N2H4+NaCl+H2O N2H4+2NH2Cl --> 2NH4Cl+N2 I would not recommend it unless you have proper safety equipment, afume hood and are doing it under supervision of a experiencedchemist.

What happens when you mix bleach and urine?

Funny that you asked this question. I dumped a half gallon of bleach into my toilet and let it sit overnight in order to dissolve the q tips my children had placed in it, and went to bed. I woke up and went to the bathroom to urinate completely forgetting about the bleach that was sitting in the bowl. After I relieved myself, I heard a fizzing sound and looked down to see the toilet water foaming. Instantly my eyes started to burn and extremely strong fumes cause me to cough and run out of the bathroom. I went back with my T shirt over my face and flushed the toilet. What happens when you mix ammonia and lighter fluid?

What most people call "ammonia" is actually a solution of what chemists call ammonia in water. If you mix household ammonia with lighter fluid, they won't mix. Lighter fluid is probably (mostly) butane, which is not exactly miscible with water. I'm not actually positive whether it's miscible with "real" ammonia or not in the liquid state, but I doubt it; ammonia is polar and butane is not.
