The last series of large denomination bills was dated 1934. That series was printed up till 1945. At that time prices were much lower than they are now so there was very little demand for high-value bills, and the government decided it wasn't worthwhile to keep printing them.

However the bills were heavily used among criminals because they were a convenient way of moving large amounts of cash without leaving an easily-followed trail. In 1969 a presidential order was issued forbidding banks from distributing anything over $100 and requiring them to hold any that were received in deposit.

The older bills were never recalled so technically you could still spend them, but they're worth more to collectors than their face value AND they'd attract attention so it wouldn't make much sense to use them in commerce.

Today most large transactions are made electronically. At the same time the EU now issues €200 and €500 bills so there have been proposals for the U.S. to make new $500 bills and maybe even add a $200 denomination. However many people in the government remain concerned they'd be used to finance drugs trafficking and other illegal activities. Keeping denominations relatively small makes it harder for criminals to transfer large amounts of money in cash because of the sheer numbers of bills needed.

Has there ever been a US 500 or 1000 dollar bill in public circulation?

There were $500, $1000, $5000 and $10,000 bills but they were last printed in the 1940s and banks haven't been allowed to carry them since 1969. The two highest denominations saw little use, but $500 and $1000 bills were used for large transactions in the days before electronic payments. The government also made $100,000 bills but these were used only within the Federal Reserve system.

What is the value of US 500 and 1000 dollar bills?

500 dollars and 1000 Dollars.Correction. Those are the FACE values of the bills; i.e. the amount you could spend them for. But high-denomination bills haven't been printed since 1945 and are worth more to collectors so you could get more money by selling them instead of spending them.
