You must wash the bedding in hot water, or anything that has come in contact with bedding. You must vacuum everything around the bedding, and spray with a special spray for bed bugs.

Can you catch bedbugs from a friend if you share a hotel room and possibly a bed with her?

No .You do not "catch bedbugs", beds and sleeping places do. So if you sleep in a hotel bed that has a bedbug problem, whether you sleep in that bed by yourself or share it with somebody else, you may well get bitten by a bedbug while you are sleeping in that bed. It is most unlikely that you will take the problem away with you. Unless, as sometimes happened, a female bedbug in your room finds your luggage open and goes in there to lay its eggs or else if you leave your clothes lying around, a bedbug lays its eggs in them. Only if that does happen you could well take the bedbug eggs home with you without realising it. Then the eggs may hatch somewhere in your home iand newly born bedbug nymphs crawl out of the luggage or clothing. Nymphs can detect the breath of anybody asleep over considerable distances, and they will immediately make for the source of that breath which will be somebody's bed in your home perhaps your bed. Once it has found you by following the trail to your breath it will have the urge to climb into your bed and bite you to have its first meal. Once it has done that, you have a bedbug problem in your bed, because it will not return to where it was born but it will find a hiding place very close to where you sleep. It will then come out and bite you again on subsequent nights while you are asleep until the nymphs become adults and lay more eggs so more bedbugs get born in or near your bed, until it becomes a serious infestation..

Can dinner guests who have bedbug bites from someone else's home infect the home that is having the dinner?

This is unlikely. Although it is conceivably possible that a live bedbug or bedbug eggs could be brought into your home if someone has them in their clothes or shoes when they come over for dinner and come out in your home, in practice this is extremely unlikely. Because the way bedbugs first get into somebody's home is most usually a result of them bringing something inside that has bedbug eggs laid in it. Most often it happens when people come back from holiday and bedbug eggs have been laid in somebody's luggage while enjoying that holiday perhaps in the hotel. Or in some cases the eggs are laid when the luggage was in transit such as in the aircraft hold on the way home. Another way bedbugs very often first get into homes is when second hand furniture is brought into the home, particularly a second hand bed, mattress or something like a chest of drawers with crevices where the tiny unhatched eggs may not be perceptible. Once the eggs hatch, anywhere in the home, the bedbugs are attracted by the CO2 people breathe out when they are asleep so the newly born nymph will instinctively make for the source of that breath, which will be one bor other of the beds somewhere in that home, and after its first meal that bed will become its home from then on as it gets bigger and then becomes an adult bedbug. The human sleeping in that bed will thereafter get bitten while he or she is asleep on subsequent nights and over time more and more new bedbugs will get born and so an infestation may occur.
